Be Still

  • Psalm 46:1-10 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. 7 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."

Psalm 46 holds one of my favorite verses in all of the Bible. Verse 10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth."

What does God mean when he tells us to be still. Is He speaking of a physical stillness? Or a stillness of our soul? Or our minds? What is stillness? I believe God is using this Psalm to show us what it is to be still in our hearts by trusting God through difficult circumstances. He is reminding us that our trust in Him should be unmovable. It’s not easy right now to be still. We are all trying to do all that we can to protect all that we have and provide all that we need. Consider for a minute today how our hearts can be still when everything around us is radically changing.

My heart can be still because of God’s presence.

Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Believer, God is present today. The Psalmist uses two words to describe God: Refuge and Strength! God is our refuge or shelter from physical harm (in which David often found himself), but God is also our refuge from hurt, dishonesty, and damage. God is the place for your heart to be still when things are trying to shake your world. There is stillness in the refuge that God provides through His Word and His Spirit. Verse one also teaches us that God is our strength. Now, David was a man of war and he knew the importance of strength. He found himself in battle at a young age when he killed a lion and a bear as a shepherd. He went on to defeat the giant Goliath. We might say, “What strength David had!” In reality, those defeats and the many others that David enjoyed were not a result of his strength but God’s. Is your heart still today? God’s presence brings refuge and strength.

My heart can be still because of God’s power.

Psalm 46:4-6 "There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. 6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted." God sits on His throne in heaven. He is the central focus of all that heaven offers. God’s throne is the enduring place of power that is not up for election or subject to other world powers. God’s throne reminds us that we can be still because God is absolutely in charge. Right now so many of us are listening and looking to our President as he gives daily updates on the virus. We respect our President’s position and listen to him because he has the great amounts of influence, information and possibly control. I want to remind you that while God has allowed our President to hold an important position, there is One who is much greater and has significantly more influence and certainly control...our Savior and our God!

My heart can be still because of God’s perfection.

Psalm 46:8-10 "Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. 9 He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth." The Psalmist reminds us that in all of the works that God has done He has never made a mistake or been defeated in them. His success rate is 100%! There has never been a power, a people, or a presence that God has not been victorious over. God has stilled wars; God has stilled weapons; God has still waters; and God can still you. God simply asks us to keep our hearts trusting in Him. We must know Who He is and trust what He is doing in our lives. When we do this, He will remind us each day of what Psalm 46:11 says, “The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah." Your heart can be still because God is present, God is powerful, and God is perfect. Will you keep trusting in Him?
